Anyone else think reflux/GERD is getting way over diagnosed?

~*~Braden’s Mommy~*~ asked:

I noticed a few questions on here about reflux today and it seems like an unusual amount of people are responding and saying their babies have reflux or GERD. Do doctors just hand out those diagnosis every time a baby spits up more than a couple times a day?

My little guy has been on zantac for GERD since he was 3 weeks old, but he really did have it bad. He would just scream and scream while arching his back because he was in pain, and was projectile spitting up everything he ate. The zantac helped, but he still spits up obviously since it doesn’t treat that symptom.

I’m not trying to say other people’s children don’t have reflux by any means, just wondering if you guys think that many babies really have the condition, or is it just something that is getting over diagnosed these days?
I agree about the medication hannah. I took my son in one morning when he was about 2 1/2 weeks old to see a nurse practitioner because of his reflux symptoms and she immediately just wanted to call in zantac without doing any testing. I opted to wait and have the pediatrician make sure before I put him on daily medicine, but it concerned me that the nurse practitioner was so quick to just say it’s reflux, give this medicine!
Mallory’s mom-I hope you find out what’s going on with her so good luck! Just in case your last pedi didn’t tell you though, no medicine can stop the spitting up, it just takes away the discomfort associated with it.
