Groshan Fabiola asked:

Two major methods are known when it comes to acid reflux treatment. Lifestyle changes and medication are then main treatments for acid reflux patients.

Changes in your lifestyle

One of the two methods used in treating an acid reflux case is the modifications that one has do make in his life. When having acid reflux, the changes will have to be permanent, because one you have had acid reflux, this condition will not go away. So treatment in acid reflux cases actually means treating the symptoms and preventing or treading the damage done by acid reflux. The first modification that you have to do when suffering from acid reflux is not to eat anything three hours before you go to bed. This change is very useful because it lets your stomach empty and the levels of acid decrease. Furthermore, if you suffer form acid reflux you should start to eat lighter meals more than four times a day. This method will also help reduce the acidity of your stomach. There are also foods and drinks that you should cut out from your eating/ drinking list if you want to treat acid reflux. Fatty or spicy foods, tomatoes, citrus fruits and mints are some of the main foods you should not eat when having acid reflux. Caffeine, carbonated drinks and alcohol must also be cut off the list. They can irritate your esophagus more, especially when suffering from acid reflux.

Other changes in your lifestyle must also be made when you are an acid reflux patient. When you are lying, your stomach contents have the tendency to come up. Therefor, elevate your bed almost six inches high and also try to stand up straight, thus reducing the pressure on your stomach.

If your baby is the one that is suffering from acid reflux, the changes in his/ her life must be done as well. Although, these changes may appear very simple to you, they will do a world of good. Thy to hold your baby in the upright position almost 30 minutes before feeding him/ her. If spitting is one of the symptoms of acid reflux that your baby has, then feeding him/ her less more frequently will help manage this acid reflux sign. Many doctors will also advice you to thicken the baby’ s formula if he/ she has acid reflux. Rice or some other formulas found in the drug stores are indicated. This will actually decrease your baby’ s amount of vomit, but this will not stop acid reflux. You should also change the position of the bed if your child is suffering from acid reflux. The head of your baby’ s bed should be elevated.

Visit it if you are looking for great information on natural cures for acid reflux, acid reflux diet, acid reflux treatment and many more.

Stop Acid Reflux

Groshan Fabiola asked:

Acid reflux is a condition that happens usually after or during a meal. At that time, the contents of your baby’ s stomach back through the esophagus, which is the tube that links your mouth to your stomach. This tube has a ring of muscles at the bottom, which opens to let food into your stomach. In adults, when the LES opens after a meal is because gas must be released. In babies, when this ring opens, is most of the times accompanied by acid reflux. Acid reflux can happen in children when they cough, strain or even cry.

There is no actual reason for concern, because acid reflux is quite a common condition in their first months on this world. Healthy infants can suffer from acid reflux as well as babies that have other medical conditions. However, by the time your baby reaches one year maximum two years of life, acid reflux should go away. If not, you should have your child see a doctor. Acid reflux also has some symptoms. A very small number of children suffer from severe symptoms cause by acid reflux. The majority experience a couple of symptoms that are mostly mild. Some of the symptoms that can indicate an acid reflux case can be: irritability, vomiting, spitting up and some blood in their stools. These are all acid reflux signs.

However, there are children that can be very affected by acid reflux. Although, their number is very small, there are cases when the symptoms of acid reflux may be cause for concern. Some of these serious acid reflux symptoms are: refusing to eat, because they could be suffering from pain; poor growth, because your child can not hold down any food due to the acid reflux; breathing problems may appear when suffering from acid reflux; burns in his/ her esophagus or blood loss. These particular problems may indicate an acid reflux condition, but could also be signs of other medical problems as well. The best thing you should do in this cases is see a doctor and discuss with him/ her the possibility of acid reflux or some other health problem.

Sometimes, tests also have to be done in order to see if your child is actually suffering from acid reflux, or those symptoms actually indicate something else besides acid reflux. There are cases when treatment can be started without any further testing or cases when a baby that suffers from acid reflux will not need any treatment.

For more resources about many acid reflux subjects like acid reflux treatment, acid reflux symptoms, acid reflux diet or many more please visit us at http://www.acid-reflux-info-guide.com .

Stop Acid Reflux

Wangeci Kinyanjui asked:

Acid reflux is a health condition that is usually characterized by the backward flow or what is termed as reflux of food to the throat. A burning sensation accompanies this process because as the food is brought back to the throat, it carries with it acid which is believed to be the cause of this burning feeling. For quite sometime now, people suffering from this condition have been trying to find a lasting solution so as to end this problem. At last, they finally have something to smile about as various possible treatments have come up.

Drug therapy is one of the acid reflux treatments that work incredibly well in solving this problem. The treatment includes the use of medicines like antacids, histamine receptor antagonists, cholinergic drugs, proton pump inhibitors and gastrointestinal stimulants to be able to deal with the disease. These medicines are used to control gastric acid production by your stomach.

For this reason, the acid will be restricted to staying in the stomach and continue with the digestion and not be allowed to flow back to the throat and cause the burning problem caused by the acid. Another way that these medicines also work, is by strengthening the lower part of the esophageal sphincter (LES). This is to help you prevent the flow of the gastric contents back to the throat. So do not shy away from using this method in order to finally end the suffering.

In cases where medication fails to be effective in providing a lasting solution to this problem, surgery may be used.Usually, this remedy is used as the last resort of acid reflux treatment. Surgery is perceived to be providing lasting solutions too for acid reflux problem. The surgery procedure is used to correct the physiological abnormalities that cause this disease. These corrections include repairing the defective valve accompanied by increasing the pressure in the lower esophageal sphinster by tightening the walls of the esophagus thus reshaping the LES. Here, the acids from the stomach are prevented form flowing back to the throat.

Patients undergoing this predicament could use positional therapy as another means of treating acid reflux. Research shows that by elevating your head when sleeping, gastric acids from your stomach find it difficult to climb upwards towards the throat. This happens because as the acid tries to climb up, gravity from the stomach keeps on pulling it back. This helps in preventing you from suffering from the acid. Among other reasons, positional therapy is also counted as a reliable acid reflux treatment.

Drinking plenty of water enables acid in your digestive system to be detoxified. As this takes place, the digestive system is let to perform its functions accordingly. When food is properly digested, it is very difficult for it to be returned back upwards into the esophagus and be able to find its way back to the throat. No acid reflux is therefore experienced.

Due to the availability of the above forms of remedies used to treat acid reflux, do not let yourself suffer from this condition and yet you can get help out of it without much struggle.

Stop Acid Reflux

Steve Parker asked:

Choking often occurs with night time acid reflux, but silent acid reflux can also cause choking, coughing, and other throat related issues. Although commonly referred to as silent reflux, the actual term for this particular form of acid reflux is Laryngopahryngeal reflux (LPR).

What is LPR? Laryngopharyngeal reflux is similar to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in that it occurs when the lower esophagealsphincter (LES) weakens and opens, allowing acid to reflux into the esophagus. However, the main difference is that the primary symptom of GERD is heartburn, while the primary symptoms of LPR typically occur in the throat.

Most people are aware that acid reflux usually occurs when the LES,the lower sphincter in the esophagus located between the esophagus and stomach, malfunctions. However, what is not as commonly known is the esophagus actually has another sphincter called the upper esophageal sphincter (UES). The UES is located where the esophagus meets the throat. When both the LES and UES fail, silent acid reflux is the result.

What is the difference between LPR and GERD? As was previously mentioned, LPR results when stomach acid makes it past both of your sphincters and pools in your throat, or reaches your mouth or the back of your nose. GERD is when acid makes it past the LES and remains in the chest and does not pass through the UES.

The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn, which occurs after a person has experienced repeat episodes of reflux, and the acid has burned away the protective lining that coats the esophagus.Although some LPR sufferers experience heartburn, this isn’t a common symptom, because the refluxed digestive juices do not remain in the esophagus long enough to cause damage. This is often why LPR is referred to as silent acid reflux, because most people don’t associate the symptoms they experience from laryngopharyngeal reflux with acid reflux.

What are the symptoms of LPR? Symptoms almost always occur in the throat and are usually felt because, unlike the esophagus, there is no protective lining in the throat.

Common symptoms that may be experienced include:

• Chronic cough

• Asthma-like symptoms

• Regurgitation

• Sour or bitter flavor in the mouth

• Frequent need to clear the throat

• Consistent mucous in the throat

• Burning sensation or pain in the throat

• Sore throat

• Hoarseness and possible loss of voice

• Difficulty swallowing

• Post-nasal drip

• Pain in the ear and/or consistent ear infections

• Nausea

• Heartburn

A silent acid reflux sufferer may experience some or all of these symptoms.

What should I do if I think I have LPR? Well there are a lot of acid reflux remedies but if you think you may be suffering from laryngopharyngeal reflux, you should visit your doctor for an examination and diagnoses. Your general practitioner (GP) may send you to an otorhinolaryngologist (a medical professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating ear, nose and throat disorders, also known as an ENT specialist).

You can expect to have different tests done, such as a fiberopticendoscopy, a special test that is designed to visualize the full length of your throat, and is often used to diagnose LPR. Other tests you may experience for further diagnosis include barium swallow or dual pH probe studies. It is imperative that you have LPR diagnosed and treated, because it can cause just as serious damage as untreated GERD.

What is the best acid reflux treatment? Silent acid reflux is primarily treated with the same methods as GERD. The reason is because the goal is to reduce acid to treat symptoms and prevent acid reflux from occurring. Thus, treatment typically involves lifestyle changes (I.E. eliminating foods and beverages that trigger acid reflux, quitting smoking, losing excess weight, not eating before bed, etc.), and may include antacid medication or surgery depending on the severity of LPR and the frequency of acid reflux attacks.

Remember that you should always consult your doctor first before starting any method of acid reflux treatment. Do not self-diagnose silent acid reflux, because the symptoms you are experiencing may be related to another condition altogether. Always seek a professional diagnosis.

Heartburn No More

Cindy Heller asked:

Acid reflux, also known as gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when the sphincter that is positioned at the bottom of the esophagus stops functioning properly. This will allow food in the stomach to come back up through the sphincter into the esophagus and sometimes even into the mouth, resulting in a painful heartburn (a burning sensation in the chest and throat) or even permanent damage to the esophagus if no proper acid reflux treatment is sought.

Acid reflux treatment varies among individual upon diagnosis. To some, lifestyle changes will be necessary to reduce the pain and discomfort of the disease. One such change is to avoid foods that trigger the symptoms. Foods that give rise to Acid Reflux are aplenty and obtaining a list of them is a good place to start. Yet, a food that cause problem for one may be perfectly fine for another. Therefore, patients are regularly advised to keep their own diet diary, so that offensive foods can be identified and avoided.

Those diagnosed with Acid Reflux should also avoid overeating, alcohol, coffee and smoking. A person who is obese may be advised to loss some weight as part of an acid reflux treatment plan. Since symptoms can get worse after a night of lying flat, one might find relief in the morning by elevating the upper body by about eight inches during sleep.

Acid Reflux Drugs Are Very Effective

If lifestyle changes are not able to provide the desired relief, one can then consider taking Acid Reflux drugs. Sometimes readily available antacids will do. In other cases, a prescription drug might be required. A point to note is that this form of treatment will have to be taken regularly and continued indefinitely

The good news is that the treatment is not difficult to administer for acid reflux in adults and children. It is rather excellent and extremely fast in relieving most, if not all of the symptoms of the person suffering for quite some time.

Are The Acid Reflux Drugs Good Or Bad To Treat The Acid Reflux

The acid reflux drugs are highly capable of getting rid of all the symptoms within a day or two from the start of the treatment. They will be free of chest pain, heartburn, and etc. These treatments are simple and direct which include one of two main acid reflux drugs.

If you do not like too many drugs, you can consider using herbs and other alternatives which can be just as effectively.

Understanding Acid Reflux Surgery

For those who do not wish to continue with medication forever or the medication is ineffective, they can consider surgery.

It is important to understand the surgical process and the complications involved if you are considering it as an option for your suffering. This is a grave matter that deserves serious consideration in terms of your options. Unless all your natural options are unsuccessful and you cannot find effective relief in either a dietary or a lifestyle change, then you can consider surgery as a solution for your recovery. You will thus have to consider the plus and minus of the surgery before deciding.

The Surgical Procedure

One procedural option for acid reflux surgery is called laparoscopy. This is a technique that is similar to tying the Fallopian tubes in females. The same principle applies and the surgeon would fold the upper stomach. It is wrapped and sutured to the esophagus from this point, wrapped around both sides of the food tube. This technique aims to restore the typical amount of pressure on the sphincter and, thus, creates a normal operation procedure that allows the correct quantity of acid to flow to the right places.

An alternative to the surgical procedure is to reduce the amount of stomach acid through medication. This is preferred to acid reflux surgery only if the surgery is deemed too dangerous for the patient or if it is not thought to work with the patient’s biochemical reactions.

The choice of treatment lies with the individual whether surgical or non-surgical procedure is used to eliminate the pervasive problem of acid reflux.

The Cure And The Suffering

The cure for acid reflux actually lies in your hands. It is not about the medicine, drugs and surgery available to cure Acid Reflux. It is about having the right diet to combat the symptoms. For someone suffering from acute acidity and acid reflux, their diet should be specially designed and they should make sure that they are never caught hungry.

People who skip breakfast or spend two hours eating lunch/dinner would never get their health back. When the stomach stays hungry for prolong period, a lot of acid is created, and it is possible for the stomach to ‘fight back’ and force it up towards the mouth. This is when you get a sour taste in the mouth.

Visit a doctor if you suspect that you are suffering from acidity. If treatment is delayed, the danger of getting esophageal ulcers will be greater. This might lead to cancer at a later stage. Always remember, “Prevention is always better than cure.”

Heartburn No More

William Lagadyn asked:

What Is Acid Reflux?

The dictionary defines reflux as a “flowing back”

or “abnormal backward flow of body fluids”

To Investigate acid reflux or what the medical community terms acid reflux disease the first thing we have to look at is the “stomach” to understand what is happening. The stomach contains both an acidic liquid which helps us digest our food and it also contains acidic gases that are present over the liquid. The stomach contents are under pressure.

Reflux or acid reflux is a natural body function for lowering the pressure in our stomach and digestive system. It is much like a pressure relief valve on your hot water tank. If the pressure in your water tank increased too much and the tank was in danger of exploding the valve would be forced open and allow the pressure to escape through the valve. Thereby lowering the pressure in the tank.

The stomach is much the same way and the “stomach pressure” can be increased by several different things such as gastric or peptic ulcers, bowel problems, H.pylori bacterium, indigestion, food, or liquids or swallowing air. Remember back in school where some little guy was always swallowing air, just so he could buurrrp and gross the girls out. All he was doing was increasing his stomach pressure.

When we swallow and the food enters our stomach and it displaces the liquid contents and the level of liquid rises. When this happens it compresses the acidic gases that are above the liquid and greatly increases the pressure that is being exerted against the Lower Esophageal Sphincter valve.

Once the pressure against the LES valve builds up enough it will force the LES valve open and the gases will reflux into the esophagus. As the gases start refluxing into the esophagus you may experience a pressure buildup in the chest. This pressure may become uncomfortable until the pressure overcomes the Upper Esophageal Sphincter valve and the gases are expelled through our mouths and we Buurrrrp After we burp or belch we relieve the pressure in the esophagus and the stomach.

Sometimes when we burp, we might notice a burning or painful feeling in our chest. This is because the acidic stomach gases are refluxing and coming in direct contact any sores or lesions that are present in the esophagus. It’s much like spilling vinegar on a cut it will cause pain.

We may have even developed “esophagitis” which is an inflamed esophagus and can make swallowing difficult. Although there are other things that can cause esophagitis the constant assault of acidic stomach gases or what we know as reflux or acid reflux can irritate the delicate cells of the esophagus and cause pain!.

People who have esophagitis may also experience difficulty in swallowing, and pain when consuming acidic drinks such as orange or tomato juice, because the acid in these beverages is coming in direct contact with the sores or lesions that are present in your esophagus.

The Esophagus doesn’t have a protective coating or lining like your stomach does to protect it from the hydrochloric acid or acidic stomach gases, and this constant assault of acid on your esophagus will cause further damage to the delicate cells if it is allowed to continue.

In order to be successful with an acid reflux treatment, you have to first locate and then correct the root cause. This can be anything from the LES valve failing to close properly, to a stomach or bowel problem which is increasing the pressure being exerted against the valve, forcing it open, and allowing the reflux to take place.

Stop Heartburn Fast

Groshan Fabiola asked:

The condition where the content of your stomach, the liquid content, comes back into your esophagus is called acid reflux. Treating acid reflux can be done in a few different ways. A change in your lifestyle may be the first choice that you have when suffering form acid reflux, medication is the second option and the third is surgery.

Medication for acid reflux

At first when diagnosed with acid reflux your doctor may start you off with some medication that are not so powerful and you do not need a prescription for. H2 blockers or antacids are the first drugs that you will be advice to take if suffering from acid reflux. Antacids are good in your acid reflux case because they can neutralize the excess acid that may be found in your stomach or esophagus. Some of these medication also have components which can prevent the backing up of the acid into your esophagus. However, these types of drugs can only be used for three weeks in a row. If this drugs against acid reflux are taken for more than three weeks, side effects may appear. Dihareea, calcium absorption or damage to your kidneys can happen. In children’ s cases, this acid reflux treatment must be given in certain doses, because they risk toxicity. The H2 blockers decrease the production of acid, helping in your acid reflux case. However, they have no effect whatsoever on the acid that you have in your stomach. This drugs against acid reflux should be taken an hour before you eat.

If these two types of medication do not work for your acid reflux case, then you might be suffering from a more serious acid reflux case and stronger drugs must be given to you. The next step in treating acid reflux will then be prescription medication, such as proton pump inhibitors. These drugs stop certain enzymes from production, which in turn aid to acid production. Together with this acid reflux drugs, doctors also prescribe coating agents. This type of acid reflux drugs protect your esophagus and stomach from acids. Drugs that help in emptying your stomach faster can also be given to you if suffering from acid reflux.

Your last option if all other acid reflux treatments do not work is surgery. However, surgery does not work in many of the acid reflux cases and it can also have some serious side effects.

For more resources about many acid reflux subjects like acid reflux symptoms, acid reflux treatment or many more please visit us at http://www.acid-reflux-info-guide.com .

Heartburn No More

Tara Mathews asked:

Drugs are not always the answer when dealing with acid reflux. Most people have forgotten that the drug “Propulsid” was pulled off the market several years ago after causing many deaths. Propulsid was used in the treatment of acid reflux. Even President Clinton used this drug.

Rather than rely on drugs to alleviate your acid reflux symptoms, using a natural methods are what this article will focus on.

Drinking about a gallon of filtered water daily along with high doses of quality probiotics is a good start in restoring the normal stomach functions for most people. Ideally, you should drink enough water to keep your urine a light shade of yellow. If you suffer from acid reflux, you may need to drink more water in order to dilute the acid and get the pH level normalized in your stomach.

Now, what are probiotics? Probiotics are dietary supplements containing potentially helpful bacteria or yeast. Lactic acid bacteria are the common microbe used in these supplements. Lactic acid bacteria, has been used in the food industry for years because they convert sugars and other carbohydrates into lactic acid. This provides the sour taste in fermented dairy products such as yogurt. It also acts as a preservative by lowering the pH and thus causing fewer chances for organisms that cause spoilage to grow.

Probiotic bacteria cultures assist the human body’s naturally occurring microorganisms, ccalled gut flora that normally live in the digestive tract. Sometimes, these Probiotics are recommended to patients by doctors and by nutritionists after taking antibiotics or as part of a treatment for stomach infections. Many people believe that probiotics strengthen the body’s immune system. Maintaining healthy gut flora is dependant on plenty of factors especially on the quality of food eaten.

Other natural acid reflux treatments are the wormwood herb Artemisia asiatica or garlic. Artemisia asiatica supports healthy fungal and microbial balance. Garlic is a food that you should be eating everyday. Garlic has the ability to optimize bowel flora and kill pathogenic organisms such as H. pylori. This particular organism is the only bacterial organism in the stomach that stomach acid cannot kill.

However, the garlic must be fresh. Before eating it, you must chew or crush it with a spoon. If you swallow the cloves whole you will not convert the allicin in the garlic to its active ingredient. Allicin is a very powerful antibacterial and anti fungal agent found in garlic. Although allicin is not present in garlic in its natural state, when garlic is ‘damaged’ by cutting or crushing, the enzyme alliinase acts on the chemical alliin thus converting it into allicin. Allicin is not a very stable compound as it degrades slowly upon standing. Cooking destroys allicin quickly.

In conclusion, in order to get the true effects of allicin in garlic, you must chew or crush it right before consuming it.

Stop Heartburn Fast

Groshan Fabiola asked:

Acid reflux is a condition that causes discomfort and sometimes may lead to serious complications if it is not treated.

Medication for acid reflux is a condition where gastric juices containing acid travel back from the stomach to the esophagus.

As any other medical condition, acid reflux involves the occurrence of symptoms. Among these symptoms we have to remember heartburn, which feels like a burning that rises from the stomach to the neck, regurgitation, chest pain, problems with swallowing, hoarseness, dental erosion or asthma. The last condition might be the cause of the acid juices that can travel up to the throat and mouth and can make air passages to the lungs.

This condition is pretty common and some patients have a so called gastroesophageal reflux disease also known as GERD.

The process includes the digestion of the foods. It is known that in the stomach the food is partially digested by the acids and the enzymes. Normally, the partially digested food that is found in the stomach is delivered by the stomach muscle to the small intestine for further digestion. Different from the normal condition, patients with acid reflux, stomach acid content travels backwards into the esophagus and causes inflammation and damage.

There are some factors that can be related to acid reflux. These factors include fatty foods, cigarettes, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, obesity, pregnancy or delayed stomach emptying.

The main causes for acid reflux proved to be obesity and pregnancy. This is certitude because for patients that are obese or pregnant there is a supplementary pushing of the stomach contents into the esophagus.

Another problem might be a full stomach. The full stomach is more prone to reflux especially in cases of immediate supine.

In many cases the acid reflux means a high discomfort that is associated with symptoms and in most of the cases will affect the quality of life and everyday activities. It is also believed that acid reflux medication is the cause of heartburn. When another condition known as esophagitis is present the esophagus might become ulcerated and can result in narrowing, making swallowing very painful and difficult.

Acid reflux usually lasts for a few months. In case it is not treated the problem might last longer. The drug treatment is prescribed for a short period of time and it should be repeated only if the symptoms reoccur.

The main treatments for acid reflux include acid suppressants, proton pump inhibitors, prokinetic agents and for the milder case, antacids.

For more resources about many acid reflux subjects like acid reflux symptoms, acid reflux treatment or many more please visit us at http://www.acid-reflux-info-guide.com .

Stop Heartburn Fast

Victoria asked:

Acid reflux is a disorder caused due to the backflow of partially digested food and digestive juice from the stomach to oesophagus ultimately destroying its inner lining. Many people suffer from this disorder. There are quite a large number of acid reflux treatments available.

Alterations in diet and lifestyle are something which can be depended upon as part of the acid reflux treatment. This includes avoiding foods stimulating the reflux, acidity and even stopping unhealthy habits like drinking as well as smoking. The same importance has to be given for altering your wardrobe to throw away tight fitting clothes and belts squeezing the stomach. You can even switch onto a stress management plan as part of the acid reflux treatment.

Drug therapy plays a major role in acid reflux treatment if you do not receive any result after altering the entire lifestyle. Some of the medications act greatly as histamine receptor antagonists, antacids, proton pump inhibitors, as well as cholinergic drugs and gastrointestinal stimulants. These have proved their ability in controlling the production of gastric acids by stomach.

It can also strengthen the sphincter muscles thereby preventing the flowing back of gastric contents onto the oesophagus. It is highly recommended to consult a physician before taking these types of drugs as many of them has got side effects resulting in serious disasters in the future.

Surgery is the next acid reflux treatment and can also acts as the final and permanent endeavor in complete cure of the problem. This include the repair of esophageal valve which is damaged followed by the releasing more pressure onto the LES by incorporating wall tightening and thus preventing any kind of leakage paved into the throat.

This acid reflux treatment was effective in almost ninety-five percentages of patients. Abnormal peristalsis, constrictions, wound infection, difficulty swallowing, perforation or damage to neighboring tissues and the inability to burp are some of the disadvantages of this acid reflux treatment. At the same time, there are also several natural methods involved to give the best effect possible in curing the problem.

Stop Heartburn Fast
